Orlando Pirates have secured their third consecutive MTN8 title, defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-1 in a thrilling final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

However, the manner of the victory, particularly the controversial second goal scored by Tshegofatso Mabasa, has sparked outrage from Stellenbosch manager Steve Barker and widespread debate within the football community.

Referee Abongile Tom’s decision to award a foul and allow a quick restart led to Mabasa’s goal, which has been heavily criticized on social media. Relebohile Mofokeng’s subsequent goal sealed Pirates’ victory, making them the first team to win three consecutive MTN8 titles in the PSL era.

Coach Riveiro made a significant decision to start Evidence Makgopa up front instead of Mabasa, who was the league’s top scorer last season. Mofokeng also began the match on the bench.

Stellenbosch took an early lead through Lehlohonolo Mojela’s impressive overhead kick. The Western Cape side opted to take a long throw into the penalty box and was flicked on by Andre de Jong before Mojela unleashed his strike to beat goalkeeper Sipho Chaine and send the crowd into ruptures.

The Buccaneers equalised on the stroke of halftime when Monnapule Saleng found the back of the net, scoring after picking up the rebound after Deon Hotto’s initial free kick was kept out.

In the second half, Pirates continued to press forward and eventually secured victory with two late goals from Mabasa and Mofokeng. While Pirates’ triumph is undeniable, the controversy surrounding the second goal will undoubtedly leave Stellenbosch with a bitter taste.
