Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabo Cele says he was fully aware of last year’s interest from Kaizer Chiefs and admitted coming back to Mzansi is a possibility, even though his focus is on his current club.
Chiefs were keen on bringing the South African international to Naturena ahead of the 2021/22 but he eventually opted to join Polish side Radomiak Radom after talks with the Soweto Giants had dragged on for too long
Cele joined the club in October 2021 on a three-year deal and his current contract will expire in June next year.
Amakhosi then revived their interest ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, as per reports in Poland, but again couldn’t bring the midfielder to Mzansi.
The 26-year-old is part of Morena Ramoreboli’s Bafana squad for the COSAFA Cup in Durban and came up with a Man of the Match display in the 1-1 draw with Namibia.
After the match, he opened up on the Chiefs interest and whether he could imagine returning to South Africa.
“It is something I know about,” he said, speaking of last year’s interest from Chiefs.
“And it is something that is always possible, especially when the window is open. I won’t lie, it is something you consider [of coming back].
“But my intention is to always climb up the ladder that side [Europe] and that is my dream, you know what I mean.
“But at the moment, coming to South Africa it is not something I think about, but you never know because it is football and there are many surprises.”
Interestingly, Chiefs is the club Cele grew up supporting and so are his family.
“It is natural for me to support the club,” he added.
